Usually discretion is my middle name but on this occasion I can’t help myself. Turner Prize winning artist and creator of the iconic Angel of the North, Antony Gormley came to our private view earlier this month. In fact so many interesting people came it was wonderful and the result was, nearly, although not quite, a sell out show for Marguerite Horner, Claire Fahys and Miranda Argyle.

On Tuesday that show came down and we did the re-hang for the new show – Shadowlines. This is a site-specific show that brings together two strikingly different London-based artists, sculptor Detta Fane and painter Ilona Szalay. Both artists are accustomed to working in isolation but have been coming together for the last five months to produce independent, non-collaborative works that share a common dialogue. The process of meeting together to explore each other’s work has profoundly affected the thoughts and output of each other. The result is Shadowline. It’s a terrific show if I do say so myself – although I haven’t produced any of the work of course so I can say that with a degree of, if not complete impartiality.

What’s on in London

Well, of course, there’s our favourite man Sir Antony Gormley on at the Hayward. I haven’t been yet, we’re planning a work trip next week. Be warned though you have to book tickets in advance otherwise you won’t be able to get in.

At the end of last week I saw the Cindy Sherman show at Spruth Magers which is really terrific and well worth a visit. It’s an installation of her 1975 work ‘A Play of Selves’ which comprises 72 photographic assemblages that Sherman cut out of black and white prints in 1975, during her last college year in Buffalo, New York, and marks one of the first uses of herself as subject in staged photographs. Running until 14 June.

Books

A couple of really interesting books out earlier this year:

Contemporary British Women Artists in their own words, Rebecca Fortnum
A fascinating book of interviews with a wide selection of women artists from Tracey Emin to Jemima Stehli. Rebecca Fortnum is going to be curating an exhibition at Beverley Knowles Fine Art in March/April 2008.

Owning Art : The Contemporary Art Collector’s Handbook, Louisa Buck and Judith Greer.
A must have for anybody interested in the contemporary art scene from a commercial point of view. Full of interesting tips about buying, collecting, maintaining, insuring art… and generally navigating the commercial art world. Also many useful and some hilarious quotations from the great and the good of the contemporary art scene including:

“Some people acquire collections of the most atrocious things just out of the sheer urge to collect. In art everyone likes to think that they are their own expert, but you wouldn’t try to do your own operation on your hand – you’d go to the best in the field.” (Ivor Braka, dealer, London)

Testimonials

“We have really enjoyed working with Beverley and will continue to do so.
She provides a unique service, combining her gallery, outsourcing of art work and an excellent website.
I can describe the type of piece we need for a project, where it will be placed, the size and style we need, and she emails me with a selection of images which are exactly the sort of thing we're after.
It’s a real bonus that we have no hesitation in taking Beverley along to our client meetings.”

Final thoughts

I came across a great quote from Waldemar Januszczak in the Culture section at the week-end…

“…the art world attracts unbalanced loners more readily than any profession I can think of, other than serial killing.”

What a fantastic advert that is for us all!

Until next time…
